Was in the Marina del Rey shopping center so bopped on in to see Ruth at Universal Jewelers. Uh oh…. gotta watch it here, she’s a very good salesman, and always has little goodies to show you.Today she had a nice amethyst ring with tiny diamonds. ?I also bought a really nice necklace for a friend’s birthday. ?Really good quality stuff at decent prices. ?And you can usually haggle a little bit. ?If you’re a regular customer, she gives you great deals.
This review is for a jewelry appraisal only!!! They appraised my diamond ring (it’s insured) in complete detail. This particular store has a “on site” gemologist and will give you an appraisal that an insurance company will accept. The appraisal cost a bit more than most places but at least I felt safe there. They are fully educated in diamonds, it’s in an open area, the store is secured with an armed guard!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry folks, I am not handing my diamond ring to a total stranger where we are the only 2 people in the room. I feel totally confident that Universal Jewelers gave me an honest, detailed, truthful appraisal on my diamond ring. Thank you!!
Beautiful pieces and willing to deal. ?That’s what you want from a jewelry store, right? ?I also had a watch strap fixed there for free. ?I got a beautiful three-stone sapphire ring there surrounded by diamonds sized the same day. ?Gorgeous! ?I worked with Ruth who is very friendly and energetic. ?She’s a great sales lady.
Universal Jewelers sucks balls – I brought 2 watches is to be appraised and they sent the watches out to the manufacturer’s (supposedly) to “be repaired” in error. ?I still have not heard from them, and I paid $120 for the appraisals.I will never do business with them. ?I find them to be totally incompetent
I have been having custom jewelry made by Universal for about 8 years. Did I mention they also fix watches that have repeatedly been submerged in water?!Sandy, Ruth and Michael are all great though I gravitate to Sandy for his great sense of humor (and he always smells good). ?You can bring in your old jewelry from crappy ex-boyfriends and walk out with a smile and a new piece without the history. Most recently they remade a pair of diamond earrings and a diamond necklace. ?When they didn’t turn out correctly they were re-done. ?Sure, it took longer than anticipated but I had hid the earrings from myself ?(they were missing for 8 months) so I didn’t mind the wait. ?I will continue to patronize Universal while yelping myself to a free coffee (in the back of the store) and all the chocolate I can eat while perusing the ever-changing estate jewels.
Old fashioned customer service and great prices~Bought a vintage time piece from Sandy (he’s the GM) and what a guy~I will definitely come back for more goodies~ Keep up the good work guys!
Not a good experience! We called ahead asking is they had a specific type of diamond in store to look at, and we were lied to and told “absolutely come on down we have one for you to look at”. When my sister and I arrived, not only did they not have what I was looking for, but the lady kept ignoring what I asked to see, and kept trying to get me interested in other things. She had already judged me and when I asked to see certain rings her response was “oh, that one is really expensive”. I’m sure as a person she is a nice lady, but as a saleswoman she made me feel terrible when I left there. = (
Wow! ?I’ve read the other reviews and it is so unfortunate to hear that people have had a bad experience. ?I hope mine isn’t unique. ?I’ve since purchased a pair of diamond earrings, a gold locket and chain and had a wonderful experience. ?To the other two posters, if you went based on my review and had an awful time…my sincere apologies. ?I personally haven’t had anything but good experiences.
This the worst experience I’ve had in a store. ?I took my husband’s wedding ring in to get it engraved as a surprise. ?I was shocked at what they presented to me. ?They had smashed all the letters together w/o the req’d spaces and brought it to me half-finished with questions on what to do. ?Why would you begin engraving something then ask questions? (i.e. put a “heart” shape versus “love”. They basically told me that the shape that I’d picked from their template wasn’t really that good and shouldn’t be used (something they should have mentioned when I brought it in and wrote out the request). ?Rather than carve up the ring a few more times I decided to have them just buff it out and bring it back to normal. ?When I came to pick it up the next day the lady actually said “oh it’s you” and went to get someone else to deal with me. ?I left with a ring that wasn’t quite the same (I don’t care what they say – no one wants their ring scratched into and “restored”. ?It’s not the same) a day before the event so – no option for the surprise. ?In summary, they did a terrible, unprofessional job and acted as if it was my fault, treating me like an inconvenience in their day.
Universally incompetent, unorganized, and unprofessional. They don’t deserve any stars, but 1 is the minimum. My wife and I ordered our wedding bands here. For her, we ordered two thin eternity bands with black diamonds and black bands. In all, they would be ready in 2-3 weeks. I had to call on a few occasions to get updates as our wedding was fast approaching. Finally, on one call, they said oh, they’re ready and here, no one called you? Hmmmmm. When we picked them up, the jeweler, Marty, assured us of the quality of the bands and new technique that would last for years. The morning after our wedding, the bands were already discolored and awful looking. Needless to say, we took them back and had them agree to redo them in platinum (at no additional cost). This was the end of Aug. He claimed it would take a bit longer to have the new ones made (because they would come from Hong Kong?), so it would be 4-6 weeks. Actually, it was more like 12 weeks. And once again, after 8 or so weeks, I had to continually call to get updates and find out when/if they would ever be ready. I called today, and Marty says yet again, oh, they’ve been here for a week…Mike didn’t call you? Uggggggh. So I rushed over to finally get my wife’s bands from the incompetent grasp of these idiots. Well…after nearly an hour of searching, they couldn’t find them. Are you effing serious? Wholesale Costume Jewelry! So Marty, being ever so kind, says if I can’t find them, I’ll refund your money. Yeah, no kidding. But then he has the audacity to guess at the amount we paid, and suggested he’d refund me a number that was half of what we really paid. I forced his lazy ass to physically go look up the paperwork to find the actual amount – something you would think a real business would be capable of. ?Again, this took a while. He finds it and admits the real amount. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the credit card with me that we used for the purchase, so told him I would return Monday for the refund. Of course, a couple of hours later, they call saying they found the rings and will drop them off (ok antique watches, they’re sort of starting to understand customer service). They drop them and everything seems good…finally! whelp…wait just one minute. Over the weekend, one of the small black diamonds fell out of one of the rings. This is the last straw. They make they’re product very cheaply…from China as they so proudly indicate, so we’ll be returning for the refund after all…and they should pay us for our wasted time (approx 12 weeks). In the end, we’ll get our money back and never go back to this horrid pathetic place of business. The sad thing is, we used the original rings as part of our ceremony and will never have the originals because of these morons. I have a feeling because we had them redone in platinum at no additional charge, they decided it would probably be easier to give me the run around and cost them less to ultimately reimburse me (hence them not being able to ‘find them’ and a diamond falling out). Such stooges. I implore anyone considering taking your business here to definitely think twice and go to another reputable jeweler instead. These people are nothing but over-blinged out wanna-be’s that have no idea how to run a business or deal with customers. Worst experience I’ve ever had with a retailer. ?Also, the positive reviews here are most likely written by employees, since i recognize two of the names.
I have had ?a few experiences with this store and they have all been positive. My husband purchased the setting for my engagement ring here and then we went back to get our wedding bands. They worked with us and found bands that were within our budget and they were beautiful!6 years later – I lost my engagement ring
Luckily it was insured. I wanted to find a 1930s/40s antique ring. I popped in there to get my ring size thinking they didn’t carry anything like that. Well they DO and after looking at a lot of stores before this I was introduced to the perfect ring. I was worried because it was out of our price range. My husband went in the next day to check it out and was able to walk out with the ring. They are extremely helpful and want to help you get what you want for the price you want – or as close to it as possible. Also, I popped in to get my ring sized and they cleaned my band for me for free as well as sized the ring at no cost. Love this shop and will continue to bring my business there. Extremely friendly and helpful! Thanks for my beautiful ring!!
Great service, knowledgeable sales staff Stainless Steel Necklaces, no pressure, and a great selection. Almost every customer that came in while we were there was a repeat customer, all very happy !
I needed the “o” ring that goes on a charm for a bracelet and they charged me 20. Not to mention waiting about 20 for them to put it on. During that time I did take a few rounds through their selection which was very nice. They are having some good sales right now.
This is an incredibly unprofessional business. ?I don’t care what kind of discount they give; it’s not worth it. ?I bought a new setting for my engagement ring 6 weeks ago, and I have brought it back three (yes, three) times. ?Each time I wait and wait for one of the owners/employees to finish personal conversations before they’ll ask me if I need something. ?Each time the person helping me with my repair – diamonds fell out (!) – seemed incredibly unknowledgeable. ?They have never apologized for the wait, bad service, issues with my new ring or the continuing repairs. ?Believe me, it’s not worth the frustration.
My husband and I have had so much jewelry made here, as well as bought the jewelry from behind the counter. They are very helpful, reliable, and pay great attention to detail when your jewelry is being made. So far, no bad experiences.
I am very surprised to read the reviews below. ?They also seem to be from users who never post Yelp reviews, which makes me suspicious. ?I had a fantastic experience with Universal Jewelers and with Sandy, the General Manager. ?We purchased my wedding band from them and they were able to beat even Blue Nile’s price for a platinum eternity band wih a higher total carat weight of diamonds at the same quality that Blue Nile has for a cheaper price. ?The ring came with an appraisal by a GIA certified expert and the store also included a lifetime guarantee in case any diamonds were to fall out through normal wear and tear that the store would replace them free of charge. ?I’m so happy with our experience and I am looking forward to buying more jewelry from them.
