Police identify jewelry theft suspect who led Oregon City officers in Interstate 205 chase
View full size Michael Patrick Pownell Police have identified the man who led officers on a chase down Interstate 205 after an alleged jewelry theft yesterday as Michael Patrick Pownell of Wilsonville. Pownell, 23, is currently being held in Clackamas County Jail without bail for charges including a parole violation. Police sought Pownell after he was spotted driving suspiciously in Oregon City. After checking his license plates, officers discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen and matched the description of a car involved in a theft earlier that day at the Fred Meyer jewelry shop on Southeast First Ave. in Canby. At the Fred Meyer, according to Canby Police spokesman Lt. Jorge Tro, a man claimed to be shopping for his grandmother’s retirement and asked to see a bracelet worth $2,795 about 1 p.m. Wednesday. The man took off with the jewelry before jumping into a black Acura Integra. Store employees noted the license plate of the car as he headed north on Oregon 99E.

And one such patron of the finer things in life just couldn’t wait to get his hands on some of the beautiful wares on show, according to Minneapolis police, who are now asking if anyone can help identify the man caught on surveillance tape. The man, who stole from the Kmart on Lake Street on September 4, used a tool to pry open the display case, and stuffed his pockets with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. Before carrying out his crime, the fellow gave the amateurish glance over the shoulder to see if anyone was looking. Might as well smile for the camera next time, rookie. The stolen goods are valued at between $4,000 and $6,000, according to police.

Sears security nab burglary suspects Topearl
Riverside CA Dec 13 2010 A parolee and his female accomplice allegedly stole a large amount of jewelry from a Sears department store in Spring Valley, and then tried to run from security guards and deputies, the Sheriff’s Department said today. Security officers at the Sears at 931 Sweetwater Rd. were able to detain Jennifer Vargas, 29, but could not corral Daniel Lopez, 38, as he fled the from the scene shortly after 8 p.m. Friday, said San Diego sheriff’s Lt. Marco Garmo. The security officers were able to flag down some sheriff’s deputies, who began to chase Lopez on foot, Garmo said. At one point during the foot chase, Lopez tried to break into a minivan, but was thrown out by the vehicle’s occupants, said sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Davis. When that proved unsuccessful, Lopez ran across the state Route 125, where authorities closed a portion of the freeway for a short time to allow a sheriff’s helicopter, a San Diego police dog unit and the California Highway Patrol to search for Lopez.
