There Are Aliens Among Us & They’re Wearing Sequins: The Bellydancer of the Universe Competition Is This Weekend
Photo by Carl Sermon By Andreanna Ditton/Special to LAist Fill the Long Beach Convention Center with belly dancers and belly dance enthusiasts and it will look pretty much like you’d expect: a sea of glitter, glitz, chiffon, sequins, false eyelashes, fake hair and boundless enthusiasm. Throw in a collection of cash prizes and cheering crowds and you have the 21st Annual Bellydancer of the Universe Competition (BDUC), happening this weekend. (So far, there haven’t been any alien competitors, but the table is open to them.) Mother/daughter dancers and promotional team Tonya Chianis and Atlantis Long held the first BDUC competition in part to help bridge cultural gaps through dance during the height of Desert Storm. Seasoned professionals and well known entertainers, the duo brought their experience, knowledge and serious sense of fun to the table to create something new for the belly dance community.

And Packham deserves the recognition. The impossibly flowy chiffons and beaded lace hotpants (our fave, hands down) had to appeal to the various starlets present, including Mandy Moore, who was actually gawking at points during the show. Not to mention that every single item was covered in sequins. The collection was inspired by the Rolling Stones tune ��She’s the Rainbow,�� and it was indeed a rainbow of soft pastels. While chiffon can sometimes read ��innocent��, Packham took risks with details�Cthink thigh-high slits and sparkling lace booty-shorts�Cfor a bit of sex appeal.

A true fashionista is like a chameleon. Her style can change drastically from one day to the next; she feels just as comfortable wearing a cocktail dress as she does in high-waisted jeans and a crop top. Do I consider myself a fashionista? No. I definitely fall into a pattern when it comes to my style and often end up wearing feminine, floaty pieces day in and day out. But once in a while, even I like to change it up from girly into well, whatever you would call this (I was told I looked like a ‘biker’ and also a ’snake woman’). And yes, I was in incredible pain in those shoes! Can you tell I’m wincing? This is why I normally wear flats .
